The reason most French press coffee tastes muddy is plunging too violently. Instead, steep for 4 minutes, stir the floating crust so grounds sink to the bottom, scoop off the bitter surface foam, and insert the plunger just below the surface as a sieve without pushing it down.
The Problem With Traditional Plunging
When you vigorously push a metal mesh plunger down to the bottom of a French press, hydraulic pressure forces high-velocity jets of water through the compressed coffee bed. This stirs up microscopic coffee silt (fines) that easily pass through the mesh and end up floating in your mug.
Why Skimming Foam Transforms Flavor
At 4 minutes of steeping, a foamy white layer forms above the coffee crust. This foam is packed with astringent lipids and micro-dust. By taking two spoons and skimming this foam off before inserting the lid, you eliminate the harsh bitter edge, revealing the sweet milk chocolate notes of beans like our Signature House Blend.
Pour gently! Once the plunger is inserted at the top surface, decant your coffee smoothly into mugs. Leave the last 15ml of liquid in the press to ensure zero grit escapes.
